Gastric bypass vs. gastric sleeve: the real differences

6 min read

Both are bariatric procedures, but they're not interchangeable. A gastric sleeve reduces the size of the stomach, limiting how much food can be consumed. A gastric bypass, in addition to reducing the stomach, reroutes part of the digestive tract, which also affects nutrient absorption.

That difference has practical implications: bypass usually requires closer long-term nutritional follow-up, given the change in absorption. The sleeve, since it doesn't alter the intestinal route, has a different follow-up profile.

Neither one is "better" in the abstract — the decision depends on factors like body mass index, associated conditions (such as type 2 diabetes), prior eating habits, and the bariatric surgeon's evaluation during the assessment.

At Surgical Travel, the approximate range for a gastric sleeve starts at $95,000 MXN, and for gastric bypass at $115,000 MXN — the price difference reflects bypass's greater technical complexity, not an arbitrary markup.

What's equally true for both procedures: the importance of real nutritional follow-up after surgery. A bariatric procedure without ongoing nutritional support significantly reduces its chances of long-term success.
